What happened
Private AI chats that people 'shared' turned up in plain Google searches
Why it matters
any client names, prices, or notes you've shared through a chatbot could be sitting on the open web
What to do
check your shared AI chat links tonight and turn off the ones with real business info

Thousands of private AI chats — full of names, addresses, business notes, even crypto wallet keys — turned up in plain Google searches this summer. If you've ever hit 'share' on a chat to send someone a link, yours could be sitting in that same pile, waiting for the right search to find it.

Think about the last chat you shared from ChatGPT or Claude — maybe you sent a coworker the wording for a contract, or a client a price breakdown. That link didn't stay between the two of you. It became a public page anyone could stumble onto with the right search.

Why this matters for you

This is the second time this has happened — private ChatGPT and Grok chats leaked into Google before, and Claude had a similar scare last September. This time, Reddit users found the search phrases that pulled up shared Claude chats over a weekend in late July, and some stayed reachable by direct link even after Google stopped listing them.

If you've ever used the 'share' button on ChatGPT, Claude, or a similar tool to send someone a chat, that page can become public — meaning anything specific you typed, a client's name, a price, an address, a password, could turn up in a search engine for anyone to find.

Sharing an AI chat isn't like emailing a private file. Clicking share creates a real web page, and if a search engine crawls it before anyone removes it, that page becomes searchable by strangers, no login or invite needed.

This isn't a one-time glitch: a similar leak last year exposed roughly 100,000 ChatGPT conversations, and Grok had the same problem.

What should I do about it?

  1. Open your ChatGPT or Claude account settings and find 'Shared links' or 'Shared conversations' (2 minutes).
  2. Click into every link on that list and read it like a stranger would.
  3. Look for client names, prices, addresses, passwords, or anything you wouldn't want a competitor to see.
  4. Delete or turn off sharing on any conversation with real business or client details in it.
  5. Search your own name and business name in Google to see if anything from a shared chat shows up.

you'll know it worked when your shared-links list is empty or only has chats that are fine for anyone to read

How can AI help me right now?

Fill in the highlighted bits, then paste this into a free chatbot like ChatGPT or Claude:

Act as a privacy-minded assistant helping a small business owner. Write a short checklist I can use tonight to review every chat I've shared from [ChatGPT or Claude — pick the one you use] and make sure nothing private is exposed. Cover: how to find my shared links, what to look for (client names, prices, passwords, addresses), and a simple habit going forward for handling [the type of info you type into AI chats most often — e.g. client contracts, pricing, notes]. Keep it under 150 words, plain language, numbered steps.
